Apache – получил свое имя потому что основатель проекта начал «патчить» код написанный для NCSA’s httpd демона. Как результат получилось: A PatCHy сервер.
Apple Computers – любимый фрукт Стива Джобса (Steve Jobs). После трех месяцев поиска Стив сказал своим коллегам что если они не предложат лучшего имени до 5 часов, то компания будет называться «Apple Computers».
CISCO – это не акроним, а простое сокращение Сан Франциско (San Francisco).
Google -изначально как шутливое хвастовство означающее количество информации в который способен производить поиск движок. В оригинале «Гугол»(Googol) – слово обозначающее единицу со 100 нулями. После того как Стенфордские Студенты Сергей Брин и Ларри Пейдж представили их проект инвесторам, они получили чек на имя «Google».
Hotmail – Создатель Джек Смит (Jack Smith) разработал идею доступа к почте с помощью веб интерфейса, т. е. возможность входить в свой аккаунт с любого компьютера в мире. Затем Сабер Бхатиа (Sabeer Bhatia) написал бизнес план для почтового сервиса, он перепробовал все типы имен оканчивающихся на «mail» и наконец остановился на hotmail, потому что данное имя содержит буквы html – языка программирования используемого для создания веб страниц. В изначальном варианте имя было представлено как HoTMaiL с выделенными верхним регистром буквами HTML.
HP – Бил Хьюлетт (Bill Hewlett) и Дейв Паккард (Dave Packard) подбрасывали монетку для того что бы решить как будет называться основанная ими компания Hewlett-Packard или Packard-Hewlett.
Intel – Боб Нойс (Bob Noyce) и Гордон Мур (Gordon Moore) хотели назвать свою новую компаию «Moore Noyce», но под таким именем уже была зарегистрирована сеть отелей, поэтому они решили использовать аббревиатуру INTegrated ELectronics.
Lotus (Notes) – Митч Капор (Mitch Kapor) назвал свою компанию в честь позиции Лотуса («The LotusPosition» or «Padmasana»). Капор был инструктором Необыкновенной Медитации (TranscendentalMeditation).
Microsoft - задумывалось Билом Гейтсом (Bill Gates) как компания увлекающаяся разработкой программного обеспечения для микрокомпьютеров (toMICROcomputer SOFTware). В оригинале: Micro-Soft, позже дефис убрали из имени компании.
Motorola - Основатель Пол Галвин (Paul Galvin) придумал это название, когда его компания начала производство радио для автомобилей. Популярную радио-компанию в это время называли Victrola.
ORACLE - Лэрри Эллисон (Larry Ellison) и Боб Оатс (Bob Oats) работали консультантами в проекте для ЦРУ (CIA Центральное разведывательное управление США). Кодовое имя проекта было Oracle.
Red Hat - Основатель компании Марк Юинг (Marc Ewing) потерял кепку команды лакросса Корнелла (с красными и белыми полосами), данную дедушкой. Руководство бета версии Red Hat Linux содержало обращение к читателям, с просьбой о возврате «красной кепки» в случае ее находки!
SAP - «Systems, Applications, Products in Data Processing», сформированная четырьмя бывшими сотрудниками IBM, которые использовали в работе «Systems/Applications/Projects»
SUN – основана четырьмя друзьями из Стенфордского университета (Stanford University), является акронимом Stanford University Network.
Xerox - Изобретатель, Честор Карлсон (Chestor Carlson), хотел что бы в имени его продукта было слово «dry»(сухой), т. к. это было главным отличием от преобладавшего в то время способа влажного копирования .Греческий корень ‘xer’ означает сухой.
Yahoo! -слово было изобретено Джонатаном Свифтом (Jonathan Swift) и использовалось в его книге «Путешествия гуливера». Это представляет человека, который является отталкивающим по внешности и действиям. Основатели Yahoo! Джерри Янг (Jerry Yang ) и Дэвид Фило (David Filo) выбрали это имя, они считали себя yahoo.

Apache - It got its name because its founders got started by applying patchesto code written for NCSA’s httpd daemon. The result was ‘A PAtCHy’server — thus, the name Apache
Apple Computers - favorite fruit of founder Steve Jobs. He was three monthslate in filing a name for the business, and he threatened to call his company AppleComputers if the other colleagues didn’t suggest a better name by 5 o’clock.

It was initially referred toas HoTMaiL with selective upper casing.
